Why is FreeWriter so different?

When you are writing you are choosing the appropriate words to express your thoughts while simultaneously developing the overall picture in your mind. Ideas come to you which you need to keep and without distraction from the work in hand. How are you to do this and maintain your creativity while engaged in the mechanics of writing? Creativity and mechanics don't usually mix too well.

Most people write using a word processor which is general purpose and multifunctional. Writing a 200 word letter is very different from writing an 80,000 word novel, report or thesis. General word processors lack the structuring support that is needed for longer documents.

FreeWriter is designed for large documents where structure, continuity, clarity and revealing things at the right time are key. It's usually used for novel writing and producing reports for academia/business, but it's free and you can use it any way way you want.

FreeWriter has something we have called the 'Thought Canvas' which provides you with a graphical tool to record your thoughts when they arise. It is quick and simple to use. Capture your thoughts, expand and embellish them. They are then easily accessible when you are writing. Having captured your creativity, you are free to write in the way you want to.

What's in a name?

FreeWriter was not given it's name just because it's free for people to use. 'Free Writing' is a recognized method where the writer quickly writes what comes into their head not worrying about the format, grammar and spelling. They then need to go back and extract the bits they want and clean it all up. FreeWriter works on the same principle but allows you to 'free write' in a graphical way and is a constant activity rather than just something you do first.

It would be wrong to provide a software program called FreeWriter and then charge people to use it. FreeWriter Standard is completely free of charge and you don't even need to to register. Just download it and off you go. The download may provide all the functionality you need with the thoughts canvas engine and probably a whole lot more than what you are using at the moment. It also gives you the opportunity to try FreeWriter Pro which provides a lot more extra features. Pro does have the modest price tag of Free - Registration required and it's up to you to decide it's worth it and want the extra features it offers.

Smoke and mirrors
We don't believe in smoke and mirrors. If you decide to just use the Standard version you won't be pressurized into to buying the Pro version by nasty pop-ups or find yourself in a corner where you have to upgrade to print or export your work. If you decide you want to trial Pro, you have ten days to try the extended functions and decide if you want the extra functionality. If you decide to stick with Standard that's fine and you won't be hassled further - fair?
